DOOM (2016)
DOOM (2016) is a reboot of the DOOM franchise developed by id Software and released in 2016. It revived the speed, aggression, and intensity of the original games while introducing modern graphics and refined combat systems. The game received critical acclaim for returning the series to its roots and redefining what a modern shooter could be.
Development
After the more story-driven and horror-focused DOOM 3, id Software initially began work on a new project often referred to as DOOM 4. That version aimed for a more cinematic and scripted approach but was eventually scrapped for not feeling like “DOOM.”
A new direction was chosen around 2013. The team, led by Marty Stratton and Hugo Martin, rebuilt the concept from the ground up, focusing on fast movement, brutal combat, and the iconic heavy metal tone that defined the franchise’s identity. id Tech 6, the new engine designed by John Carmack before his departure, powered the reboot with smooth performance and stunning detail.
Gameplay and Features
DOOM (2016) brought back the core philosophy of “push forward combat.” Health and ammo were regained through aggression rather than retreat, encouraging constant motion.
Key features include:
Glory kills, brutal melee finishers that reward health pickups.
Fast movement with double jumps, mantling, and no reloading delays.
A mix of classic weapons like the Super Shotgun, Plasma Rifle, and BFG 9000.
Arena-style combat zones that blended old-school level design with modern pacing.
A new SnapMap editor that allowed players to build and share custom levels.
Multiplayer was also included, offering class-based combat and demon transformations, though reception to this mode was mixed compared to the stellar single-player campaign.
Story and Setting
The game takes place on Mars, where the Union Aerospace Corporation once again experiments with energy from Hell. The player, known as the Doom Slayer, awakens in a sarcophagus and proceeds to destroy the demonic invasion unleashed by scientist Olivia Pierce.
The story is told indirectly through terminals, logs, and the environment itself, keeping the Slayer’s role simple: eliminate demons with unstoppable fury.
Reception
DOOM (2016) was praised for its fast, fluid gameplay, impressive visuals, and soundtrack by Mick Gordon. Critics called it a “return to form” for the series and one of the best single-player shooters in years.
It won multiple awards, including Best Action Game at The Game Awards 2016, and became a commercial success, revitalizing the entire DOOM brand.
Legacy
The success of DOOM (2016) not only revived the franchise but also influenced a new wave of retro-style shooters often referred to as “boomer shooters.” Its sequel, DOOM Eternal, expanded on every aspect of the formula, adding complexity and skill depth while retaining the brutal rhythm that made the reboot so beloved.
