Qtest

QTest

QTest was an early multiplayer test build of Quake developed by id Software in 1996. It was released prior to the final version of Quake and was primarily intended to test online deathmatch functionality.

Although not a full game release, QTest is historically important as one of the earliest public demonstrations of internet based multiplayer in a first person shooter.

Overview

QTest was distributed as a free downloadable test version before the official release of Quake. Its purpose was to allow players to stress test the networking code and provide feedback on multiplayer performance.

The build focused almost entirely on deathmatch gameplay and did not include the full single player campaign found in the final version of Quake.

Gameplay

QTest featured:

  • Early Quake deathmatch
  • Limited maps
  • Simplified menu systems
  • Early network code for online play

Players connected via IP address, often using dial up connections. The experience helped shape the multiplayer foundation that would later define QuakeWorld and competitive FPS gaming.

Historical Significance

QTest demonstrated the potential of internet based multiplayer gaming at a time when most shooters were played over LAN or modem.

The testing phase directly influenced improvements made to the final release of Quake in June 1996.

Differences from Quake

Compared to the retail release of Quake, QTest:

  • Had fewer maps
  • Lacked the full single player campaign
  • Included experimental networking features
  • Contained early versions of assets and gameplay balancing

Legacy

QTest helped lay the groundwork for modern online shooters and competitive gaming. The networking technology tested during this phase became a major reason Quake established itself as a pioneer in online multiplayer gaming.
