SIGIL

SIGIL is a fifth episode for the original DOOM, created by John Romero and released in 2019 as a free megawad for the game’s 25th anniversary. It serves as an unofficial continuation of The Ultimate DOOM, picking up right after the events of Thy Flesh Consumed.

The project marked Romero’s return to classic level design, using the original DOOM engine to create new maps that captured the spirit of the early 1990s while introducing a darker and more personal style.

Background and Development

Romero announced SIGIL in December 2018 as a spiritual successor to the classic DOOM episodes he helped design. The idea was to create a new set of maps for fans who still played the original game through modern source ports such as GZDoom and Chocolate Doom.

The project was built entirely in the original DOOM engine format, using old-school tools like Doom Builder. Romero approached SIGIL as if it were 1995 again, designing each level by hand and focusing on flow, rhythm, and challenge rather than modern scripting or features.

The episode was released as a free download and as part of a limited physical edition that included a soundtrack by Buckethead and artwork by Christopher Lovell.

Story

SIGIL continues the story of The Ultimate DOOM after the Marine’s victory over the forces of Hell. Upon returning from the infernal realm, he discovers that he has been betrayed and imprisoned within the darkest corners of Hell itself.

The episode follows his escape from a twisted labyrinth of fire, flesh, and torment. While simple in structure, the story reinforces the DOOM Slayer’s endless battle against demonic corruption and isolation.

Design and Gameplay

Romero’s design in SIGIL returns to his roots — fast movement, tight spaces, and trap-heavy encounters. The levels feature:

Interconnected layouts

Teleporter mazes and ambushes

Low lighting and surreal architecture

A soundtrack that intensifies the atmosphere

The difficulty is high even for experienced players. Romero intentionally designed SIGIL as a challenge for veteran DOOM fans, blending puzzle-like structure with chaotic combat.

Reception

Upon release, SIGIL received strong praise from the DOOM community and critics alike. Fans celebrated it as a pure return to form and a reminder of what made the original game so influential.

Some players described it as “Episode 5: Hell refined” — a blend of nostalgia and modern craftsmanship. The physical “Beast Box” edition sold out quickly, featuring custom artwork, a red USB drive shaped like a floppy disk, and Buckethead’s exclusive soundtrack.

Legacy

SIGIL stands as both a tribute and a continuation of Romero’s early work at id Software. It demonstrates how level design can remain timeless when driven by creativity and rhythm rather than technology.

In 2023, Romero announced SIGIL II, a follow-up built for the DOOM II: Hell on Earth engine, continuing his connection to the community that made him a legend.

For many fans, SIGIL symbolizes the perfect reunion between the creator and the game that defined a generation.
