DOOM: The Dark Ages

DOOM: The Dark Ages is a first-person shooter developed by id Software and published by Bethesda Softworks. Released on May 15, 2025, it serves as a prequel to DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal, exploring the mythic origins of the Doom Slayer in a dark medieval world of steel, fire, and demons.

Development

Following the success of DOOM Eternal, id Software began development on a new chapter in the Slayer’s saga under the codename Year Zero. The project was officially revealed in 2024 at the Xbox Games Showcase as DOOM: The Dark Ages.

Built on the new id Tech 8 engine, the game introduces large-scale battles, destructible terrain, and even more detailed lighting and animation systems. It maintains id Software’s trademark 120 FPS fluidity across high-end PCs and current-generation consoles.

Creative director Hugo Martin described it as “a prequel to the Slayer’s legend — the origin story of his wrath.” The tone and visuals draw inspiration from heavy metal album covers, medieval warfare, and gothic horror.

Setting and Story

The game takes place centuries before the events of DOOM (2016), in an age when humanity’s greatest warriors — the Night Sentinels — fought against the demonic legions of Hell. Players step into the armor of the first Doom Slayer, forging the myth that would echo throughout history.

The story blends fantasy and sci-fi, with ancient fortresses powered by infernal technology and demonic armies storming the realm. Through blood and metal, the Slayer rises as a living weapon destined to battle the forces of Hell for eternity.

Gameplay and Features

DOOM: The Dark Ages expands the fast-paced combat of the modern series into a new era of brutality.

Key gameplay elements include:

Shield and sword combat, introducing the Crucible Shield, a massive weapon that can parry, crush, and slice enemies apart.

Mounted battles on the back of a biomechanical dragon-like creature, adding high-speed movement and aerial fights.

Expanded melee mechanics with finishers that chain directly into ranged combat.

Destructible environments, allowing tactical control over combat spaces.

Open war zones with allied Night Sentinels, siege weapons, and large-scale demon invasions.

The game maintains the “push-forward combat” philosophy, rewarding aggressive play with resources gained from kills.

Reception

Upon release, DOOM: The Dark Ages received widespread critical acclaim for its bold setting, world-building, and combat innovation. Critics praised its mix of medieval brutality and futuristic weaponry, calling it a fresh yet faithful addition to the series.

The soundtrack by Mick Gordon returned to a heavier, more orchestral tone, blending choirs with industrial metal. Fans also celebrated the game’s visual design and lore depth, which connected seamlessly to the events of DOOM Eternal.

Legacy

DOOM: The Dark Ages marks a new era for the franchise, successfully blending fantasy storytelling with the kinetic energy of modern DOOM. It closes the current trilogy while opening the door for future stories in the universe.

The game has been noted for proving that DOOM’s core identity — speed, aggression, and attitude — can thrive in any setting, even one forged in steel and myth.
